Our Mission...
To share our Lei Fund and our love with the children, who need our help most. In this sense
we would like for the underprivileged youth of Hawai‘i to become our collective responsibility.
As the guardians of our children, they will become our “lei," each one of them the favorite
child of our community.
Our Goal...
The Lei Fund seeks to become a scholarship endowment for children from transitional
housing. This scholarship will help them pursue a higher education. We firmly believe
education is the best long term solution to solving the homeless problem in Hawai‘i
Small Beginnings...
The Lei Fund is being established by Kids' Pics, a small photography class taught by Minako
Ishii and Jeffrey "Rusty" Kent at the Maili Land transitional housing complex in Waianae.
These special young children have lent their talented eyes to our cause. They are donating
the profits from the sale of their photographs to help support the founding of the Lei Fund.
From these small seeds we hope to grow this fund to incorporate all the children that are
underprivileged in Hawai‘i.
Our Inspiration...
The inspiration for this scholarship fund comes from the kindness of four Hawaiian Ali‘i.
Through the benevolence of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Queen Lili‘uokalani, Queen Emma, and
her husband King Kamehameha IV, the founding of the Kamehameha Schools, the Queen
Lili‘uokalani Trust, and the Queen's Medical Center were made possible. These institutions
have helped countless generations of families living in Hawai‘i better their lives.
Most inspiring is the story of King Kamehameha IV going door to door to solicit donations
from the citizens of Hawai‘i, while Queen Emma held concerts and fairs to raise money to
build the Queen's Medical Center. In one month they raised enough money to surpass their
fund raising goals. What started off as an eighteen bedroom hospital has grown into a
medical facility that serves thousands of Hawai‘i's residents every year.
The Lei Fund aspires to follow this model by starting small and dreaming big. In the future
we hope to leave our legacy as a story of inspiration to the people of Hawai‘i.
